Lacoste

is a world-famous French brand established in 1929. Lacoste produces apparel, footwear, eyewear, cosmetics and perfumes, and since recently home accessories. The beginnings of Lacoste are associated with René Lacoste’s passion for tennis. Lacoste’s innovative design, a polo shirt, became a cult product of Lacoste and was an alternative to the existing t-shirts worn by tennis players. Lacoste soon began to promote wearing polo shirts on everyday basis, also beyond tennis court. Initially, like any novelty, his idea seemed preposterous and too bold, but Lacoste polo shirts were comfortable and airy, and, due to a collar, could be considered less elegant versions of a traditional suit shirts. The unconventional idea caught on and soon fashionable men of those times began to wear Lacoste clothes. The brand’s characteristic logo is a green alligator, and there is a certain anecdote behind it: in 1926 René Lacoste, playing tennis during US Open, “bet” with his friend that he would win the match; the stake was an alligator leather bag. René reportedly played fiercely like an alligator, so the bag landed in his hands. The press nicknamed the young player “Alligator”, and after some time the image of a crocodile became the hallmark of Lacoste.
